Accessibility statement

Last updated: 6, 8 and 9 October 2026

This statement is separate from the educational Accessibility page, and is not by itself evidence of conformance with any standard.

The outer Uglisite website

We aim to make Uglisite's educational pages (Home, Accessibility, Resources, About and this page) clear and usable, with readable content, consistent navigation and support for different ways of interacting.

The deliberately bad Experience

The Uglisite Experience is an educational demonstration of design barriers. It intentionally includes poor contrast, confusing controls and distracting movement. These features do not represent the accessibility aims of the outer website — they are the thing the outer website is teaching people to recognise.

The Experience is now connected to this website (see The Experience), with its own styles kept separate from the outer site's. A "Back to Uglisite" link is available throughout it: on wider screens (roughly tablet width and up) it stays fixed in a strip down the left edge, reachable at any scroll position; on narrower screens it appears as a bar at the top of the page and is reachable again by scrolling back to the top — see Known limitations below.

What has been checked

We have checked keyboard navigation and focus order, visible focus, heading structure and landmark regions, colour contrast, and layout across a range of screen widths, on both the outer website and the connected Experience. Within the Experience, we specifically checked that the controls people use to take part — rather than the deliberate flaws themselves — are keyboard-reachable and clearly focus-visible, including the "Spot the Ugli" flaw cards, the multi-step "Good Booking" comparison, and the "Back to Uglisite" link.

These checks were automated and manual testing, not a review by a person using a screen reader, and they do not mean the Experience as a whole is accessible — almost everything else in it is deliberately difficult to use, by design, because that is what it is teaching. We have not tested the outer site or the Experience with a screen reader or other assistive technology, and we do not claim conformance with WCAG or any other accessibility standard.

A detailed record of what was tested, how, and what it found is available on request from healthworkerburnout@gmail.com.

Known limitations

  • The Experience is intentionally difficult to use in places — that is its teaching purpose — and is clearly distinct from the outer site's own aims. The checks described above make the flaw-finding exercise itself reachable by keyboard; they do not fix the flaws, which are the point.
  • Below roughly tablet width, the "Back to Uglisite" link sits in a bar at the top of the Experience rather than staying fixed in view, because reserving permanent space for it at narrower widths was found to push some of the Experience's own content into a horizontal scrollbar. On those narrower screens it is reachable again by scrolling to the top.
  • No testing with screen readers or other assistive technology has been carried out on the outer site or the Experience.
  • Zoom and text enlargement have been checked only using automated proxies (resizing the browser window, and a CSS zoom property), not a person using a browser's or operating system's real zoom or text-size controls.

Feedback

If you encounter a barrier on the outer website, or need information in another format, contact healthworkerburnout@gmail.com and describe the page and the difficulty. We will consider how we can help.
