BEFORE YOU START

Want to see what bad UX actually feels like?

Uglisite is a booking site built to be genuinely frustrating on purpose. Click through it, feel the friction first, then unpick why it fails and see how the same experience could work better. It takes a few minutes. The confusion that follows is intentional.

Friction is design.

Embrace the uncomfortable. Stop making things easy when they could become educationally inconvenient.

The future of educational participation

is currently undergoing un-maintenance.

IMPORTANT FACT

Tuesday is technically closer to Wednesday than Monday.

“I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse.”

Your one class was insufficient. Select at least two more classes for reasons we will not disclose.

You can only book one class at a time. Please remove items until only ONE remains.
STEP 6
Very Important Verification

Before we let you enter your age, please answer one completely relevant question.

Awaiting evidence of basic human competence.
7
Fine. Enter Your Age.
STEP
Provide Your Personally Identifiable Tiny Text

Every field is approximately the same width because all human information is obviously the same length.

5 letters max. That's enough. We don't need your life story.
STEP 9
Choose Your Temporal Preference-ish

Before selecting a date, tell us roughly when you would like time to happen.

Thank you. Now choose an actual date.

Secure / Reserve / Pre-Book?

Please review the educational encounter you previously booked, selected, reserved, secured and are now apparently pre-booking.

[ YOU SURVIVED ]

That was a lot of work for a very simple task.

Let's unpick it.

INTRO · UNPICK → LEARN → TRY

Before you could begin.

Before you could even start, we made you wait and guess. Let’s take those moments one at a time.

UNPICK THE MODES

Accessibility isn’t
a colour scheme.

Night, Day and So-So changed the colours. They did not automatically make the interface easier to perceive or use. A usable theme has to preserve contrast, hierarchy, boundaries, focus and meaning.

NIGHTShould ease eye strain in low light.“It’s dark. So obviously there is less to see.”
DAYShould stay comfortable in bright light.“It’s light. Apparently you now need shades.”
SO-SODEFAULTShould be a calm, neutral middle ground.“Muted does not automatically mean comfortable.”
CAN YOU STILL USE IT?

Colour can support meaning. It cannot be the only meaning.

The same weakness hides in every mode above. Toggle it below, then reveal what needs to survive every theme.

Choose a class

Better: readable contrast, clear boundaries and a visible ✓ Selected state preserve meaning even if colour is removed.

WHAT TO CHECK IN EVERY MODE
TEXTStays readable, even in a muted mode
FOCUSKeyboard focus ring stays visible
BOUNDARIESButtons and fields stay visibly separate
STATE“✓ Selected” is written, not just coloured
DO IT WITHOUT THE UGLI

Same task.
Different design.

Same classes. Same booking goal. Same Uglisite personality. This time the interface applies the principles you just unpicked.

STEP 1 OF 3 · CHOOSE ONE CLASS

What would you like to learn?

Choose one class. Useful details appear before you commit, so you can decide whether it suits you.

Why show this before booking? A short description, date, time and location help people predict whether a class fits their needs and availability before they enter the booking flow. Level helps people judge whether the course matches their experience and also gives the site structured information for searching, filtering and comparing courses.
SPOT THE UGLI · RECOGNITION

Can you spot
the Ugli?

Same kind of task. New problems.

Tap the things that feel confusing, awkward, risky or harder than they need to be. You do not need the terminology. Notice what feels wrong — not everything here is.

TRANSFER COMPLETE

You’re starting to see it.

You recognised the same UX principles in a different interface. That is the point: not memorising rules, but noticing when design makes people work harder than they need to.
